While it isn’t as layered or as lengthy or even as ruthless as some of its rivals in the genre, you’ll find that the game manages to always keep things fresh by constantly bringing in new elements and gameplay mechanics throughout. Mario + Rabbids uses a similar type of grid-based tactical combat system, but credit should be given to the game not only trying to tear up the formula, but putting its own unique twist on it.īattles in Battle of the Kingdom are an all-around solid and utterly enjoyable affair. Mario + Rabbids is a turn-based tactical RPG, and for people who are familiar with this kind of gameplay in recent versions like XCOM (or, to some extent, even Fire emblem), you will feel right at home here. What is most remarkable Battle of the Kingdom is that despite being a cross of the Mario and Rabbids franchises, the core of its gameplay doesn’t borrow much from either of the two properties. Mario + Rabbids is very, very good, more than it has the right or the reason to be, and for my part, I’m happy to see how wrong I was in my initial assessment of the concept of the game. But the second you embark on this strange and beautiful journey, all your doubts are gone. It felt like a cashgrab trying to play both sides at once, a mix that wouldn’t settle well and would probably be very shocking – and given the different nature of the two franchises in question here, you wouldn’t be blamed for having been skeptical too.
